Scholarship and Bursaries

T W HINCH SCHOLARSHIP FUND


This fund was set up in the early 1950s by the OBA to be awarded to a teacher in any of the ACS schools. The sum awarded is not large ($1,500 - $2,000) but it is nevertheless considered an honour to receive it. It is usually given to a teacher who intends to go aboard for a particular course of study and the recipient is expected to teach in a ACS school upon returning to Singapore. Mr. Ho Yee Cheong of ACS (Independent) was awarded $2,000 under the T W Hinch Scholarship Fund in 1998.


LIM SONG SCHOLARSHIP


This scholarship is available for students entering a course of study in a tertiary institution. Given by the trustees of the Lim Jo Yan Trust, it is intended for graduating junior college students. Usually one or two scholarships are available each year. The scholarship has not been awarded for the last few years.


WONG NANG EONG SCHOLARSHIP


This scholarship is open to students fro Anglo-Chinese Junior college. The requirement however is that they must return to their alma mater to teach after they have completed their course of study. This scholarship was set up in memory of the late Dr. Wong Nang Eong, a past president of the ACS OBA, in 1991 by his classmates, friends and family. Mrs. Christina Afzal of Anglo-Chinese Junior College was awarded the scholarship in 1998.


THIO CHAN BEE SCHOLARSHIP


The Thio Chan Bee scholarship was set up by Tan Sri Dr Tan Chin Tuan to honour the late Dr Thio chan Bee for being the first Asian and the first old boy of the school to be appointed as principal of the school. The Thio Chan Bee scholarship will be awarded to a very bright and financially deserving Secondary 3 student for 2 years (subject to him maintaining a high academic performance) in Secondary 3 and Secondary 4. Mr. Li Rongzhao of Anglo-Chinese School (Independent) was awarded the $1,500 scholarship for 1997 and 1998.


ACS OBA HUMANITIES SCHOLARSHIP


The ACS OBA has also offered 2 scholarships to be called the ACS OBA Humanities Scholarship to ACJC to enable the college to continue to attract bright students to ACJC.


OBA BURSARIES FOR NEEDY STUDNTS


The ACS OBA has recently offered bursaries to needy students at our ACS schools whose parent may be adversely affected by the current economic crisis. This financial assistance is to enable them to continue their studies at ACS.


The ACS Class of 1978 Bursary Fund


The ACS Class of 1978 successfully organised its 30th anniversary reunion on 4 July 2008 and as part of the celebration of 30 years of friendship, we have raised funds for 4 annual bursaries for current students of ACS schools. The bursaries will be awarded for a period of 10 years.


The bursaries will be based on students' needs (not academic performance) and a committee has been set up to decide on the recipients. The award(s) will be made to the recipient(s) on Founder’s Day each year.


The ACS Class of 1978 Bursary Fund


1. You must be a current student in any of the schools under the ACS family during the year of award.


2. The award is to be based on your financial needs.


3. The Class of 1978 Committee will be guided by the schools who will be required to vet your financial needs.


4. The bursary amount is to be spent on school fees or other related school items such as textbooks and CCA programmes. It is not meant to be used for overseas class trips. The bursary may also be used for transport to and from school, and recess pocket money.


The Bursary


1. A one time cash award of $780 each per year per bursary shall be given out.


2. A maximum of 4 bursaries shall be given out each year. Any bursaries not given out in a particular year due to lack of suitable candidates may be added to the number of bursaries to be given out in the following or subsequent years at the discretion of the Selection Committee.


3. The ACS Class of 1978 Bursary Fund will be available for a period of 10 years beginning 2008 to 2017 unless otherwise extended.


4. The decision of the Selection Committee shall be final.


Procedure for application


The Bursary will be administered by the ACS Class of 1978 Committee. Please submit your application together with the relevant supporting documents as requested in the attached application form to the ACS Class of 1978, through your school, by end January each year.


Members of the Selection Panel will comprise the committee members of the ACS Class of 1978. The Bursary will be made available by March of that relevant year, and you will be informed through the school if successful.


Proposal for the ACSOBA-Choo Hwee Lim Award (Badminton)


Mr Choo Hwee Lim’s coaching style and ethos, which focused on teamwork, physical fitness, perseverance and commitment to the overall team is well remembered by former members of his badminton team. Coaching the badminton team from the mid-1970s, he instilled foundational values in the boys under his charge, and emphasised the giving of one’s best on and off the courts, to win with humility and to lose graciously.


In honour of Mr Choo for his contributions to ACS and for shaping the lives of many ACSians, a group of former ACS badminton boys have set up the ACSOBA-Choo Hwee Lim Award.


Conditions


1. To be awarded to a maximum of 2 students per year, one each from ACS (BR) and ACS (I).


2. The nominees must be current members of the respective schools’ badminton teams.


3. Nominee has to show commitment to the badminton team and the school.


4. Nominee must not have any adverse disciplinary record.


Award

2. The award would be given out at the schools’ award ceremony.


Procedure


The award will be administered by the ACS OBA.


ACS (BR) and ACS (I) are to submit the names of the potential candidates to the ACSOBA by end March each year.


Members of the Selection Panel will comprise Mrs Choo Hwee Lim and/or her nominee, the ACS OBA President or his nominee, Principals of ACS (BR) and ACS (I) or their nominees.
